Rules, Regulations & Information 

The Caledonia Cup is sanctioned by the Alberta Soccer Association, the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association and the Scottish United Youth Soccer Club 

All matches will be held from Wednesday Feb 17th to Monday Feb 21st

Coaches and Team Staff please read the entirety of this document as there are new rules regarding roster freeze date, pre-game check in and  Capacity Restrictions with spectator limits and Masking Requirements. 

Also note rules of the game as all districts may not play the same format.

Capacity Restrictions and Masking Requirement in Effect

Maximum of One spectator per player limit in the Dome. Plus accompanying children under 12 years of age.

The Dome continues to have a maximum capacity of 500 until March 1st.

Masking is required by all attendees 12 years or older at all times. Players can remove their masks only when on the playing field and it is recommended to re-mask when on the bench.

Additionally, all coaches and team staff members (whether on the field or in the technical area) must wear a mask properly at all times to ensure the safest possible match play environment.

Dressing rooms will not be available.

The website will be updated to reflect any changes by the Government of Alberta or City of Edmonton.

Spectators & Facility Passes

Enter the Dome via the North revolving door and exit via the South door.

Spectator and players are to use the one way red track to access fields.

Spectators are not to cross through the centre of the field.

Entry to the Dome is $5 per day or $10 weekend passes are available in the clubhouse. Weekend passes are transferable.

Vaccination records will be checked at the door. Have your records ready to speed up this process for all.

Only water is allowed in the Dome. No food, Gatorade, coffee, tea….

Rules of Play

This tournament will adhere to IFAB Laws of the Game and current ASA Rules. 

The Caledonia Cup Tournament shall abide by ASA Governance Documents, including the By-Laws, Governance Policies and Rules & Regulations.

Home team will be required to change jerseys should both teams wear like colours. It is the responsibility of the home team to carry alternate jerseys or numbered pinnies. 

Substitutions:  Unlimited substitution at any stoppage with the discretion of the referee.

Offside at half for U13 and retreat line for U11.

Retreat line rule in effect for U9-11.

Players and team officials are expected to obey the Laws of the Game and respect all game Officials.

Coaches and team officials must stay within the technical area and spectators are not allowed in the technical area. 

Teams are responsible for the behaviour of their players, team officials and their spectators.

Any situation occurring in tournament play, that is not covered by these Rules & Regulations, shall be assessed by The Caledonia Cup organizers on an individual basis. 

Any decision or ruling made will be considered official and final.

In the event that there is a conflict between the listed tournament rules & regulations and EMSA or ASA modifications for 9v9 play, the tournament rules & regulations will take precedence.

Red Cards & Ejections **NEW**

A coach, team official, or player receiving two cautions (yellow cards) in a single match is considered to have been given an ejection (red card). In this situation the team does not play down a man.

Any player or team official receiving 3 yellow cards during the tournament duration will be awarded a red card and must not play the following match. In this situation the team does not play down a man.

Absolutely NO SPITTING. Any player or team official found spitting will receive a red card and immediate ejection from the facility. Any spectator found spitting will be immediately ejected from the facility. 

EJECTIONS/DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

ASA rules prohibit any coach, team official or player ejected from a match, or suspended by the proper authority, to be within sight or hearing distance of the field of play during his/her suspension. 

A coach, team official, or player who has been ejected for VIOLENT CONDUCT shall not be allowed to participate in the next TWO scheduled matches (subject to review by the Tournament Director). Any coach, team official, or player who assaults a referee will be expelled from the tournament. FIGHTING will not be tolerated for any reason. Coaches, team officials, players, or spectators sent off for fighting (striking or attempting to strike another coach, team official, player or spectator) will not be allowed to participate in any further tournament matches. Coaches, team officials, players or spectators who enter the field of play for any reason, in the event of a fight, will be ejected from the tournament. If the coaches, team officials, players or spectators cannot be identified, the entire team will be removed from the tournament. No refunds will be made to any team that is removed from the tournament for fighting.

Any coach or team official that is coaching more than one team in the tournament and is suspended on one team is automatically suspended from any other team or teams until the suspension has been served.

If in the opinion of the Centre Referee, a match must be terminated for misconduct, the offending team forfeits that match and will be suspended from further play in all remaining matches which would be forfeited. Previous points earned and any right to a refund, awards or other consideration will be forfeited. In addition, the home league and governing Association will be contacted.

Any verbal abuse directed at committee members, referees or other volunteers will also result in suspension and ejection.

Referees have complete authority during all matches and will not allow abusive or profane language, threats of any kind or any style of play that detracts from the Game of Soccer.

Team Registration

Registrations are to be done online via the tournament website www.caledoniacup.com

**All teams are placed on a waiting list upon registration. Team entries must be approved by organizers. An email will be sent to the registrant informing them your team is off the waitlist. Payment is due directly after receiving this email to save your spot. **

Registrations are not complete until payment has been received through the online payment system or your cheques has been received by the tournament treasurer. 

Scheduling requests can be communicated by posting notes on your registration page. We will do our best to accommodate scheduling requests. Please note that this is not always possible. 

After registration completion, you must enter your tournament roster online, and upload a copy of your official roster (ASA, GoalLine or equivalent) and email any guest player forms and any out of province paperwork to [email protected]

Player Registration and Team Rosters

All players, including guest players, must be currently registered with their district. 

Proof of player registrations and guest player forms must be with the team at all times.

The maximum number of players on the team's tournament roster is dictated by the number of registered players on their official team roster with a tournament maximum of 20 players per team for U13 and 16 for U11 and below (including goalkeepers).

Guest players must not increase the team's roster above the original number of registered players. A guest player is only allowed to replace a registered player on the team. 

No player shall be allowed to play for more than one team in the tournament. 

There will be no changes to team rosters after the deadline of February 11th at 10am. 

Any changes to the roster after a team's first game will be at the discretion of the tournament organizers. 

Teams playing ineligible player(s) will forfeit any game in which the ineligible player participated. 

Roster Lock Date **NEW**

The rosters will  locked on Friday, February 11th at 10am, 2022.  

No additions will be allowed after the rosters freeze. All tournament players and official league rosters must be inputted into the tournament registration site by this deadline. 

Tournament Gamesheets will be printed February 11th by Caledonia Cup so any additions after February 11th will not be on official gamesheets for pre-match gamesheet check.

Pre-Match Check In & Gamesheets

Game sheets will be printed by tournament staff.

One team official must check-in at the Tournament GameSheet Check Station situated inside the Dome at least 30 minutes prior to the time their match is scheduled to begin. 

This team official is to state any players and/or bench staff not in attendance and confirm jersey numbers. No other changes will be allowed.

Copies of guest player forms for each guest player must be presented to the tournament official to accompany the game sheet. 

The Tournament Officials are there to assist you with anything you might need and to handle the administrative concerns of the matches. They do not have any authority to add players to a roster or over any decision normally made by a referee or tournament director. 

Any players or officials not on the gamesheet will not be allowed on the pitch or technical area.

Officials will submit the completed game sheets directly to Tournament Headquarters. Results will be on the website shortly after game sheet submission. 

Guest players / Trialists

Each team may have a maximum of 3 guest players on their tournament roster. 

Guest players must be from a lower tier, a lower age group or a lower division. All guest players are required to be properly registered in the same district association as the tournament team for the current season. 

Players who are playing up an age group are not permitted to be a trialist for a team that is in a lower age category then the current team they are registered on even if their birth year is the same as the lower age group.

Guest players must not increase the team's roster above the original number of registered players. A guest player is only allowed to replace a registered player on the team. 

All guest players must be correctly indicated on the online registration  and each game sheet. 

No player shall be allowed to play for more than one team in the tournament. 

Players currently serving suspensions are not allowed to play in the tournament until their suspension time has been served within their league play. Any team playing a suspended player will default that game. 

A Guest Player Consent form must be completed for each guest player and approved by the tournament committee. This form must be completed and sent to tournament officials at  [email protected] prior to February 11th at 10am.

Teams must carry a copy of the guest player form for each guest player and present it at pre-March check in. 

The tournament team must acquire written permission from the team from where the guest player (s) will be drawn. 

Out of Province Team Information

Prior to February 11th, all teams must submit the following to [email protected].  Please include your team name and manager contact information. 

-Club or association travel permit, where applicable. 

Out of province teams (or any teams not registered through 1 of 23 ASA Regular Members) must contact the tournament director to receive instructions on how to register your team. Please submit a request for out of province team information to [email protected]doniacup.com. 

Schedules

Schedules will be posted by February 3rd, 2022. Once posted, schedules will not be changed for any reason other than scheduling error. It is your team official's responsibility to check our website regularly for any scheduling changes after initial publication.

Parking

Parking is available at the grounds. Please obey all parking lot attendants and signage. Any cars parked outside designated public parking areas will be towed.  

Absolutely no parking in staff spots, in the drop off / turn around loop and the emergency access road between East and West lots.

Scottish fields have an overflow lot on the West side of the complex. Access is through the main lot off Ewing Trail. Please note the 5km/hour speed limit on the thru-road. This is for the safety of all the guests and their children.

The parking lot is a busy place with young children in tow. Please schedule enough time to find a parking spot and get to your match in good time.

Game Format

U9-U11 will play 8v8 on 70x37 yard fields

U13 will play 9 v 9 on 77x47 yard fields

Each game shall consist of two 25 minute halves with a 3-minute break at halftime. 

Tournament officials have the right to shorten game times for scheduling purposes. Every effort will be made to retain official game lengths. 

Referees will be instructed not to add time to a match except under the most extenuating circumstances. However, all matches will be terminated not less than (3) minutes prior to the scheduled start of the next match.

Teams must be prepared to play exactly at game start time.

Teams will have 3-5 minutes on the field prior to game start should time allow. 

Teams may warm up at the ends of the dome. Please be mindful of spectators and stray balls into matches being played.

Forfeits/Game Cancellations

Failure to show up or arriving more than 15 minutes after start time will result in a forfeiture of that game. The win will be awarded to the opposing team.

Referees have the power to call or cancel a game for reasons other than weather conditions. Reasons may include but are not limited to:

  • Abusive behaviour by players, team officials and/or spectators
  • Dangerous levels of play, etc.

Cancellations of this nature must be communicated immediately to Tournament Headquarters. The results of the game in question will be decided by the Tournament Committee and that decision will be final. 

Any team refusing to play a game to its entirety will forfeit that match. 

Pool Formats 

Pool formats will depend on the number of teams grouped in each pool.

4 Team Round Robin with Medal Games

Every team plays 3 round robin matches.

Placements for medal/consolation matches determined from standings after all round robin matches are played. 1st and 2nd place play for Gold/Silver and 3rd and 4th place will play a consolation match (or Bronze for U9-U11 only).

Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss.

5 Team Round Robin

Each team plays a match against the other 4 teams in the group.

Medals are determined from standings after all matches have been played.

Gold and Silver medals awarded.

Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss.

6 Team Crossover

Each team will play two round robin games against other teams in their group.

Round robin standings will place teams for semi-final rounds: 1st from group A/B will play 3rd from group B/A and 2nd from group A will play 2nd from group B to determine placements for final medal/consolation matches. 

Placements for medal/consolation matches determined from standings after all semi-final matches are played. 1st and 2nd place play for Gold/Silver,  3rd/4th  and 5th/6th place will play a consolation match. (or Bronze for U9-U11 only).

Tournament may swap teams for final 3rd/4th and 5th/6th matches at U13 level should teams play same as semi-final round as no bronze medals are awarded at this level and increasing exposure to multiple opponents to play. 

Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss.

8 Team Crossover 

Each team will play three round robin games against other teams in their group.

Placements for medal/consolation matches determined from standings after all round robin matches are played. 1st and 2nd place play for Gold/Silver,  and 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, 7th/8th place will play a consolation match. (or Bronze for U9-U11 only).

Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss.

Round Robin games may end in a tie. Refer to tie-breaking procedures to determine the winner. 

The Mercy Rule will be in effect for all U9-U11 games and goal for goal differentials are calculated after implementation of the mercy rule. 

All medal games require a result. Medal games that are tied at the end of regulation time will proceed directly to a Shoot Out (Penalty Kicks) to determine the winner.

Shoot Outs (Penalty Kicks)

A Shoot Out (Penalty Kicks) will take place to determine the winner of any medal game where points are tied. 

All players on a team are eligible, including goalkeepers, unless they are serving a red card (or two yellow cards) suspension or have been dismissed from the match prior to the shootout. 

The number of eligible players will be equal for both teams so any team with more players will select the appropriate number of players who will not be allowed to participate in the shootout.

Goal will be chosen by the referee.

Coin toss decides which team will kick first. Captain of the coin toss winner chooses whether to kick first or second.

Teams will alternate kicks.

Both teams will take 5 kicks. If at any time during the shootout one team has scored more goals than the other team could score by completing the five kicks, no more shots are taken.

If at the end of five kicks per team the score is tied five different players from each team will take kicks.

A different player will take each kick prior to any player taking a second kick.

Only match Officials and eligible players are to remain on the field during a shootout. Coaches, assistants and the remaining players must remain on the bench.

No spectator or team official is allowed behind the goal where kicks are taking place.

Only the two goalkeepers and the player taking the kick are to cross the restart line. All players awaiting their kicks must remain at the half mark.

The goalkeeper who is the teammate of the kicker will on the field of play, behind the corner mark at the same end of the field.  

Inclement Weather

Tournament organizers will determine if the fields are unsafe to play due to inclement weather. Teams are expected to check in at the field for their regular scheduled game whatever the weather conditions may be. The decision to play the game will be decided at game time.

If a game has been played more than 50% before being called, the game shall be considered complete and the score at that time shall be the official outcome of the game. 

If a game cannot continue and less than 50% of the game has been played, the game will be rescheduled based on field availability. Should no fields be available, outcomes will be decided by shoot out. 

Disputes/Protests

The Tournament Director shall settle all disputes and their decision shall be final. 

Protests regarding decisions by Game Officials or related to laws of the game will not be accepted. 

Teams protesting a player's ineligibility have up to 60 minutes following the game to lodge their protest in writing. Teams having played an ineligible player will forfeit all games that player participated in.

Award Presentations (Medals)

Medals will be presented to the winning teams directly after the final games have been played and results have been confirmed by tournament organizers.

U13 pools award Gold and Silver medals.

U9-U11 pools award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

Teams and individual players will then have the opportunity to take photographs with the Caledonia Cup Trophy. 

Medal Presentation Locations

All medal presentations will be at the tournament site.  Your team will be informed of the medal presentation location directly after match completion.  

On Site Amenities & Activities

A First Aid supplies, defibrillator and ice are available on site. 

The Clubhouse Concession and Bar (kid-friendly) will selling food items, popcorn, candy, beverages,  and more.

Our Facilities are following the Restrictions Exemption Program. Anyone 12+ seated in the Clubhouse will be required to provide documentation.

There is an ATM machine on site. 

Onsite parking (but as with any tournament, carpooling is suggested if possible). 

***No dogs are allowed into the park***

 This policy will be strictly adhered to and there will be
no exceptions. Please ensure no one from your team brings
a dog as we do not want dogs in cars in the parking lot. 

A no smoking policy is in effect on the grounds. 

This will be a great weekend of soccer! The Edmonton Scottish United Soccer Club looks forward to hosting you with everything you need provided on site.

Conduct on and off the Field

Any person on the Tournament Grounds / Facilities will be expected to behave is a respectful manner conducive to a family event.

The Caledonia Cup tournament has zero tolerance for inappropriate behaviour by or towards officials, coaches, players, spectators, parents, volunteers and staff. Any person behaving inappropriately will be required to leave the premises immediately. In extreme circumstances teams may be expelled from the tournament. 

Teams and/or individuals will be held financially responsible for any damage done to any of the facilities or grounds associated with the tournament. 

Refund Policy

There will be no fee refunds (either partial or full) to any team once entry into the tournament has been confirmed.

*Should the tournament be canceled due to changes in provincial restrictions, registration fees will be refunded minus a $60 administration fee.
